It's way too bulky and the 24-70 f4 S is much sharper, smaller and has silent focus for things like video. Though I might consider the 24-85mm VR if you still want to stay with a compact F-mount zoom and stay cross mount compatible. The most notable aspect of the 24-70 vs the 24-120 is actually the Bokeh and rendering. The 24-70 is capable of producing great images as opposed to good ! The nikon 24-70 Vr is a different lens altogether. It does not work great at close distances, which is further hindered with very noticble focus shift. I had the 24-120, ended up selling it and getting the 24-70 f/2.8 (not the VR). I actually miss the 24-120 to some extent, I thought the IQ was just fine. I shoot shows, low light, so I need the f/2.8 and the faster AF. The AF is the biggest difference I noticed. But, for walkaround, I would take the 24-120 if I still had it. I have tested the 24-120 F4 against the Zeiss 21 2.8, Zeiss 2/25, Sigma art 20mm, Nikon 28mm 2.8 AI-S, Nikon 28mm 1.8g, Nikon 24-70 2.8 (non VR), and I couldn't find a big enough difference in IQ to justify purchasing any of those for landscape use. It's a real bargain when purchased in the d750 kit.
